Bad road photographs, 1898.

Photographs of muddy road conditions entered in a competition sponsored by the League of American Wheelmen in 1898 to gather evidence of the need for better roads. Images were made in Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and New Jersey. They show stuck and tipped-over vehicles, a boy standing in mud above his knees, and roads with deep ruts and furrows.

The League of American Wheelmen first began in New Port, R.I. in 1880 and was the governing body for bicycle racing at that time. The organization continues to survive as the League of American Bicyclists providing cycling education for adults and children.
